In honor of National Reading Month, SA YES unveiled two “Little Lockers” at Edgewood ISD and South San ISD on Thursday, March 4. In addition, the organization’s subsidiary, AUSTIN YES, unveiled an additional “Little Locker” at Del Valle ISD on Friday, March 5. These “Little Lockers” are available to the public and will provide free art supplies and outdoor activities for the summer months, as well as books on a variety of topics throughout the school year. The “Little Lockers” will offer educational resources for students annually.
In San Antonio, the “Little Lockers” were made possible through a partnership with the Frankie Casseb Youth Literacy Club, and in Austin through a partnership with Todd Hart, an active member of Red Light Laughter, which promotes therapeutic intentional laughter in all places. SA YES is extremely grateful to partner with the Frankie Casseb Youth Literacy Club and Todd Hart, whose mission closely aligns with that of SA YES.
SA YES works closely with districts during the school year and one of the common issues we kept hearing about was school libraries funding being reduced. We were fortunate enough to partner with Harlandale ISD in 2020 to unveil SA YES’s first Little Library, and then the world shut down. During this new challenge, we realized that children needed an outlet, and we filled our library with art supplies and crafts, thus renaming to the Little Locker Project.
Funding is continuing to be reduced in the 2020-2021 school year, and our hope is to establish eight Little Lockers in the San Antonio community. Similar to 2020, we will fill our lockers with books during the school year and then encourage community members to get creative by supplying the lockers with crafts, sidewalk chalk and more!
We kicked off National Reading Month by establishing our first Little Lockers for the Edgewood, South San, and Del Valle districts, but are positive they won’t be our last for these community members. To find the nearest SA YES “Little Locker,” please visit: https://littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/
