While most people think of the month of May and June as the time to sit back, relax, maybe even take a vacation – SA YES is working full speed ahead. Within the past two months, they’ve provided $10,000 in grants benefitting STEM programs and inner city youth as part of their YES Grant initiative, and partnered with Harlandale ISD to establish a new “Little Locker” in southside San Antonio.
On Tuesday, May 25, The PM Group generously donated a check for $10,000 to SA YES as a gift in honor of Joey Tomlinson and his continued support of SA YES and being an educator in our community. On that same day, another $80,000 was awarded from one of their Texas Hold’Em Charity Poker Tournament. SA YES feels very fortunate to have been a beneficiary of the event and partner with The PM Group. Over 16,000 children have been able to receive free school supplies courtesy of The PM Group, sponsors, and tournament players.
On Thursday, June 3, SA YES presented Pleasanton ISD with a YES Grant for $6,000. Funds will benefit students in grades 9-12th. The funds will be used to purchase a curriculum for Intro to engineering from Systems Go. Pleasanton High School has offered 3 courses in engineering in the past few years but has not had a solid introductory course or a full program of study in engineering. With the STEM career cluster being in the top 2 of the Alamo Area labor market data, there is a significant need to have robust STEM programs concentrated on this study. Their goal is to create a solid engineering program and then focus on adding other STEM programs.
Furthermore, onThursday, June 10, in partnership with the Frankie Casseb Youth Literacy Club and Harlandale ISD, SA YES unveiled a new “Little Locker” at Terrell Wells Middle School. SA YES provided Fiesta crafts and summer activities for students within the “Little Locker,”and distributed free tacos to all event attendees provided by Double A’s BBQ. This SA YES initiative is associated with Little Free Library, a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity, by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world.
SA YES continues to stay ahead of the game and strives to help out their students where it is needed most. As summer kicks into full gear, stay tuned to see what other exciting activities SA YES has in store!
