November is often associated with the month of giving, and what better gift to give than that of education? The first step in this process is helping students realize their dreams can become a reality through continuing education. The financial implications of college can be a daunting next step for students, but it doesn’t have to be with the amount of support that exists through scholarships.
National Scholarship Month is a time to raise awareness about the need for financial support by promoting postsecondary education. Established in 1998, students, parents and businesses alike are all encouraged to participate. The month-long event is sponsored by the National Scholarship Providers Association, with the goal of getting all students into and through college.
There are many resources available to assist in selecting which scholarships are the best fit for your student. The Austin Community Foundation has compiled a list of scholarship opportunities available in the Austin area, but there are many more available online or by contacting the financial aid office at a school your student may be interested in. Remember that you don’t have to pay to find scholarships or other financial aid. Many submission deadlines begin in mid-February, so it’s important to check the requirements of each to ensure proper preparation.
During the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the gift-giving process. We encourage you to be mindful of the gift of education, and the accessibility for all students that scholarships can provide.
